about

In 2010, ex-Fuck Knights Joe Hastings and Joe Holland enlisted drummer Ben Crunk to form a one-shot Link Wray cover band. The Holland Hastings and Crunk Trio stuck it out to become the sweaty and intense garage-R&B band The Sex Rays. Their live shows are renowned for their endurance and polish, featuring hours of leather, smoke and tight goddamn performances. Hastings and Crunk trade lead vocals, and organist Dave Krejci frequently diversifies their pallette.

Their new single “Midnight Caller” is a kicker from start to finish. Early Kinks guitar strikes the beat, with gradual accompaniment from organ, tambourine, drums and bass, locked in an unpretentious stomp, with subtle flourish, while Hastings struts and whispers to the spaced bass-led breakdown. Backed with the swaggering, exploding instrumental B-side “Where’s the Tambourine?” This record will find strong approval from fans of Link Wray, Dale Hawkins, and The Stooges.

“The Sex Rays are cool. Best described as Sex Pistols meets Link Wray, they play rock ‘n’ roll party music.” - Cyn Collins, author of West Bank Boogie.

“I was not prepared for the Sex Rays’ energy, their classic garage-rock sound or their polished stage presence. “ –The Big Takeover
