Itchy mod-punk influenced by First Alert, Elvis Costello and The Jam. Mystery Date follow up their enchanting power-pop singles with this ambitious and unified debut LP. The Saint Paul trio's sugary melodies and jagged hooks are laced with an underlying theme of cold war paranoia and romance under surveillance. A clattering punk opus that rewards repeated listens.
Maximum Rocknroll: "This is a great record. Like, this is Top 10 of 2015 material. This is pop music. And it’s punk and it’s new wave. It’s strangely catchy and poppy, while also a little bit eerie and dark. And this is going to sound a little corny, but it’s delivered with an honesty and sincerity and sense of urgency that can’t be faked."
Faster and Louder: "While still operating within the bounds of mod-punk and power pop, Mystery Date have managed to do something genuinely different. I wouldn't call this new wave, but there are major elements of that going on. I wouldn't call this garage, although the minimalist production does fit the bill. I would call this a bold and highly creative work of loud guitar pop. Its vision is cinematic without being pretentious, and its songs will be stuck in your head for weeks."
Soundly Sounds: "Mystery Date deliver fantastically in terms of the sort of thing one wants from a garage record. Each song is bursting with pop brilliance, quotable lyrics, and guitar solos. It’s hard to pick a favourite, but “Safety Trigger”, “Cosmos”, “You Can’t See It” and “Wouldn’t You Like To Know”. They just seem like the songs on here which are throbbing with the most frenzied riffs and have been attacked with the best melodies. However it’s important to reiterate that every track on here is a No.1 single here, in both our hearts and minds."
