about

Narco States are a pummeling and aggressive psychedelic rock band from Minneapolis, heavily influenced by Black Sabbath, The Stooges and The Pretty Things. Formed in 2012, they have become known in garage rock circles for their intense performances, with lead singer Michael Meyer withholding nothing onstage (infamously, he separated his shoulder while falling from the ceiling of the Hexagon Bar with the microphone in his teeth). Guitarist Nate McGuire wends solos between Meyer’s wails. Bassist Nick Sampson’s Geezer Butleresque grinding is punctuated by hard-hitting drummer Justin DeRusha, with organist Aaron Robertson’s spaced-out vamps being the band’s true calling card. They released a self-titled 7” EP in 2013 on Piñata Records, which quickly sold out (now on subsequent pressings).

Wicked Sun takes everything that was exciting about Narco States’ debut EP, drives it into the desert at night pumped full of DMT, and holds its eyes open as the sun rises. The intense organ, the wailed yowl, the wild guitar solos; they all return, but they’ve grown. The band realize their potential, magnifying the immediacy by embracing longer song structures and instrumental breaks. The shouted four-count into “Lost in Time” sets the tone and the force never abates until the closing coda of “Wicked Sun”. A true rock album in the classic sense, and a vital entry to modern psychedelia.
